Ukraine women in the army: Enough to keep up troop numbers?

Ukraine is in need of more troops, and discussions are underway about changes to the way soldiers are mobilized. A new draft bill would increase penalties for people who dodge the draft – and make more citizens eligible for conscription. One source that has so far remained largely untapped is women.
Around 42,000 women are currently estimated to be serving in the Ukrainian army – an increase of 40% in 2021- the year before Russia’s full-scale invasion. At least 5,000 of those are reported to have been deployed at the front.
Currently, women cannot be conscripted and have to actively enlist if they wish to serve. New training camps are offering women opportunities to prepare for combat roles.
