Trudeau keeps Freeland as Deputy PM

Shadow Chancellor Responds to Government’s Budget Announcement

Deputy PM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday that Chrystia Freeland would stay on as deputy prime minister and finance minister, after Canadians voted to return a Liberal minority to power in the Sept. 20 federal election. Trudeau made the comments during his first full media availability since winning re-election. The newly re-elected prime minister added that a new cabinet would be sworn-in in October, and that Parliament would return before the end of the fall. Trudeau also spoke about his plans to increase vaccination levels, stating that he would introduce a vaccine mandate for the federal public service, and for travel via train or by air, within Canada.

He also said the government would continue its work to establish international proof of vaccination and “foot the bill” for provinces who introduce their own vaccine passports. The prime minister also addressed the recent release of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, thanking allies who “stood strongly in solidarity with Canada.”
