NATO Rejects Serbia’s Demand To Enter Kosovo As Tensions Escalate | North Kosovo | NATO It was 15 years back that Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. Of course, it wasn’t the most amicable of separations. The two, in fact, went to war in 1998-99 when NATO bombed then-Yugoslavia, comprising Serbia and Montenegro, to protect Albanian-majority Kosovo. Since then, Serbia has developed an anti-West sentiment. In fact, many of the 100,000 Serbs living in Kosovo have refused to accept Kosovo’s independence. Now, Serbia is rolling up its sleeves for a showdown with Pristina. For the first time since the 1999 war, it has sought NATO’s intervention.
