Gender Recognition Act
Earlier in the week, I attended a press conference in Buswell’s hotel, across the road from Dáil Eireann in Dublin. The Countess and Laoise De Brún were launching a policy research document and drive to get a section of the Gender recognition act amended. Peadar Toibin TD and Carol Nolan TD joined Laoise with a draft amendment bill and they are looking for about 10 TDs to sign it so this amendment can be taken to the next stage. Ireland is a self-ID country which means anyone can change their gender and receive a gender recognition certificate. The Countess is a group of men and women whose mission is to promote and protect the best interests of the women and children of Ireland. This was a cherished ideal of the founders of the Irish State, including our namesake, Countess Markiewicz, a minister in the first Dáil and the first female cabinet minister in Europe.
What is the amendment seeking to amend you might ask?
Well, in short, to get men out of women’s prisons. A UK study, referenced in The Countess policy and research paper show that in 2019 56% of trans-identified males in UK prisons were sex offenders. We get to this and many other topics during the course of our interview.
