Japan’s ambitious lunar exploration mission takes off as the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) sets sail on an H-IIA rocket. Japan’s JAXA successfully launched its lunar exploration rocket from Tanegashima Space Center despite three weather-related delays last month. Japan’s ‘moon sniper,’ SLIM, is set to land within 100 meters of its lunar target in February. This $100-million mission follows two previous lunar landing attempts by Japan that ended in failure.
