Fears of Escalation as Strikes Straddle Israel-Lebanon Border

Fears of escalation as strikes straddle Israel-Lebanon Border

There are mounting fears of an escalation in the conflict on Israel’s border with Lebanon. Lebanese officials say four civilians, including three children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike near the southern town of Aynata. The Israeli military says it is examining the incident. Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group has responded by firing rockets at the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona.
Around 250,000 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, mostly in camps established after the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948. As refugees, they do not have Lebanese citizenship and are not permitted to work without a permit. It was meant to be a temporary solution, but has dragged on into the fourth generation. Now, as the latest war between Hamas and Israel enters a second month, many in these camps say they want to join the war against Israel. DW Special Correspondent Amien Essif visited the Bourj al-Barajneh refugee camp south of Beirut.
