Atrial Fibrillation Cases Skyrocket in the UK — 1 in 45 Now Live with Condition

UK Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation Surging 50%

Why is the number of persons in the UK diagnosed with atrial fibrillation surging 50% in just a decade, totaling 1.5 million today? This means that 1 in 45 people in the UK are now living with this condition. This diagnosed heart condition raises the risk of stroke, reports the British Heart Foundation. The surge is based on a 50% rise from 2013 (1 million) to today. The report doesn’t identify any year-to-year trends. What’s the culprit behind this surge? Is it lifestyle and growing health challenges in the population? What about the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 -caused pandemic? What about mass vaccination? Not surprisingly, these topics were left alone.

People with this diagnosis are five times more likely to succumb to a fatal or life-changing stroke. Atrial fibrillation is the most common form of abnormal heart rhythm and is believed to contribute to one in five strokes.
