Why Iran and Saudi Arabia are moving to restore diplomatic ties

Iran and Saudi Arabia

Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to restore ties and reopen diplomatic missions. The surprise agreement was brokered by China and the deal could have wide-ranging implications across the Middle East. Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and re-open embassies within two months after a seven-year diplomatic breach which has fuelled tensions in the Gulf and deepened conflicts from Yemen to Syria. The agreement was reached after talks in Beijing which hailed it as ‘victory’ for dialogue and peace. Saudi Arabia has blamed Iran for missile and drone attacks on the kingdom’s oil facilities in recent years.
